For investors in wait-and-see mode after the election of Donald Trump as U.S. President, there certainly has been a lot to see during his first month back in the White House.

“Bloomberg Open Interest” featured Aoifinn Devitt, a Senior Investment Advisor at Moneta, to share her expert insights into the evolving economic and geopolitical landscape on Feb. 20, 2025. Show anchor, Katie Greifeld, pointed out that markets are reversing with “treasury yields going south, the dollar going south, you have the S&P 500 trailing rest of the world,” and then asked Devitt what she makes of all that action.

“We’re grappling with some of these new geopolitical realities that are still being formed. The uncertainty is starting to get itself felt in markets… at every level,” Devitt said.

The ensuing discussion touched on several topics relevant to investors. Devitt offered a valuable lens through which to understand the current state of global markets.

New Geopolitical Realities: Devitt highlighted market uncertainty at the consumer level around inflation and at the top level where corporate executives wrestle with how to allocate their corporate spending.

Treasury Yields and Federal Reserve: Regarding the trend of declining Treasury yields since Trump’s presidency, Devitt emphasized the Federal Reserve’s independence and data-driven approach, contrasting it with other central banks like the ECB, Bank of England, and Bank of Canada.

Inflation Concerns: Devitt expressed uncertainty about the direction of inflation, acknowledging the market’s high sensitivity to recent inflation data and the potential for the Fed to act if necessary, though cautiously to avoid triggering further inflation.

Global Market Dynamics: Devitt observed a shift in market behavior, noting increased reactions to international market behaviors. She underscored the importance of a global investment approach, suggesting that American exceptionalism might have been overstated.

China’s Real Estate Risks: Devitt expressed concerns about potential cracks in China’s real estate market, which could lead to a collapse similar to the 2008 financial crisis.
