Purpose and Philanthropy: Turning Wealth into Meaningful Impact

Compardo, Wienstroer & Janes at Moneta

At Moneta, we believe your wealth should empower you—to make a difference, shape your legacy, and focus on the things that matter most to you. That’s why we’re one of the few Registered Investment Advisors with a dedicated Chief Philanthropy Officer. This role reflects our commitment to helping clients not only grow their assets, but also to use them to create lasting, positive change.

A Unique Role with a Meaningful Mission

Our Chief Philanthropy Officer, Deb Dubin, works with clients across the country and around the world to help them bring purpose and intention to their giving. “It’s a unique and distinct opportunity to help our clients with something deeply important,” she explains. “Many want to engage in philanthropy and impact investing in ways that truly align with their values.”

Through thoughtful conversations, Deb helps families explore the why behind their philanthropy, what motivates them, what issues matter most, and what legacy they want to build. From there, she helps them design giving strategies that are both purposeful (deliberate and well-structured) and purpose-filled (deeply meaningful and aligned with their beliefs).

Discovering What Matters Most

Philanthropy looks different for every family. That’s why Moneta takes a discovery-based approach, learning about each client’s history, values, and aspirations before developing a personalized plan.

Some clients are passionate about causes close to home, focusing their giving locally. Others think globally—funding initiatives that reach across borders. Once we understand their motivations and goals, we help them connect their values to specific opportunities where their generosity can make a tangible difference.

“It’s such a joy and privilege,” Deb says, “to work with people who want to impact the world around them and help their communities thrive.”

Giving Along the Continuum of Impact

Every act of philanthropy can make a difference, but it can happen at many points along a continuum of impact.

For example, clients passionate about early childhood education might:

  • Fund immediate needs—like classroom supplies, tricycles, or healthy snacks for local childcare centers.
  • Support mid-term goals—such as expanding programs, hiring teachers, or building institutional capacity.
  • Invest in long-term change—by supporting advocacy or policy initiatives that shape the future of education.

Each approach is valuable, and some clients choose to engage at every level. Others focus their giving on one specific area where they can see and measure direct impact.

The Connection Between Investing and Giving

At Moneta, we see philanthropy and impact investing as part of the same continuum. Both are powerful ways to create change—one through investment returns, the other through charitable giving.

On the investment side, our focus is on a double bottom line: achieving strong financial performance and measurable social or environmental outcomes. For instance, clients who care deeply about water sustainability might invest in the blue economy—companies and projects focused on clean water and marine conservation—where both financial and impact returns can be quantified.

When a client’s goals extend beyond financial return, that’s when philanthropy takes center stage. Deb helps clients craft giving strategies that complement their investments, ensuring a unified approach to making a difference.

A Partnership for Greater Good

What makes this work so rewarding is the collaboration between our investment and philanthropy teams. Together, we empower clients to make a difference across the full spectrum of wealth—through both capital and compassion.

At Moneta, we don’t just help clients grow their assets; we help them grow their impact. By connecting purpose with strategy, and passion with expertise, we help ensure that every investment—and every act of giving—contributes to a legacy that truly matters.
